Welcome to Year 6

Our Autumn Term Big Question is:

Can things stay the same?

 

This term, our Big Question – “Can things stay the same?” – will be at the heart of our learning. We will explore stories, people, places and ideas from different times and perspectives, making connections between our learning as we consider what stays the same, what changes and what might cause those changes.

Our English journey begins with The Arrival by Shaun Tan, a beautifully illustrated story that invites us to explore unfamiliar places, new experiences and the lives of those who find themselves far from home. Later in the term, we will turn to The Journey, continuing toexplore powerful ideas through rich language and imagery. Alongside our English lessons, Skellig will provide plenty to wonder about as we meet unusual characters, unexpected friendships and events that are not quite what they seem.

In Maths, we will work with numbers up to 10,000,000, before developing our fluency and reasoning through the four operations and fractions. We will look for patterns and connections, challenge our thinking and explore how mathematical ideas fit together.

Our History learning will take us back to the Atlantic Slave Trade, where we will explore the people, places and events that shaped this significant period in history. In Geography, Water World will take us beneath the surface as we investigate water, its importance and the journeys it makes around our planet.

Science will bring us closer to the natural world as we explore adaptation and variation, considering the fascinating differences between living things and the environments in which they live.

We will also broaden our understanding of the world around us through RE, exploring the many different ways religion and belief can be expressed across the world. In Art, we will investigate photography as a form of design, experimenting with how images can be composed and used to capture ideas, moments and perspectives.

Throughout the term, we will be encouraged to ask questions, make connections and think deeply about our Big Question, allowing our learning in different subjects to give us new perspectives to consider.
